8 Can’t-Miss Off-Page SEO Strategies to Build Your Online Reputation

Posted by ronell-smith

Off-page SEO is the act of optimizing your brand’s online and offline footprint through the use of content, relationships, and links to create an optimal experience for prospects and search engine crawl bots. It typically leads to gradual increases in positive brand mentions, search rankings, traffic to your site, and conversions.

Sounds fairly straightforward, right?

Well, for the attorney seated in front of me in my kid’s elementary school lunchroom, I might as well have just told him the earth is flat.

“That makes no sense to me,” he said, pushing his chin forward and tilting his head, as if waiting for me to admit that I was pulling his leg. “You mean, there’s all this stuff [an SEO] does on my site? And there is stuff that we — me, my team and [the SEO] — should be doing off our site as well? That’s like telling me, ‘It’s not enough that you live and pay for a nice house in a gated community. You also need to guard the gate to the community and pick up trash along the road leading up to your driveway.’”

His example could not have been more apt.

LinkBuildingStrategies2016

A lot of the conversation around link building often starts with a phrase like: “Remember how easy link building used to be?” Well, 2016 looks like it isn’t going to get any easier, but that doesn’t mean it’s something you can skip. Link building remains an integral part of a strong SEO strategy – you just have to be more careful about how you do it.

2016 is going to require a change in perspective. Link building is tied very closely to Authority Building, which means that you have to look at it as more than just a number. While links are certainly necessary to build authority, there may be some other ways you can make your link building more effective.

So let’s take a look at the things you need to know … Read the rest

Building Online Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

Posted by MorganChessman

Building marketing strategies for small businesses is one of my favorite things. In my first marketing role, I worked in the marketing department for a small company before moving on to Distilled, where I’ve been lucky enough to continue working with small businesses that have enormous potential. Despite the various industries, locales, and personalities, one of the prevailing similarities between them is that small businesses often don’t position their company or use the web as effectively as they could. While this is partially due to the time and resource crunch small business owners feel, it’s also because, beyond building a website, they don’t know where to begin.

It doesn’t have to be so overwhelming though. I’ll walk you through the preliminary steps I take my small business clients through.

1. Define the brand

Brand Images

A number of the small companies I’ve worked with didn’t have a brand. That’s not to say that they didn’t have a name, a website, and a logo. It’s that they didn’t stand for something.

For example, what comes to mind when you think of Apple? Innovative and well-designed products? Exactly. So many small businesses are built from an individual wanting to … Read the rest

SEO has come a long way since the 90s. “Content is king” is the ruling voice today, but that has not always been the case. Long before Google, there was a time where it seemed there were no rules. Even after Google was founded, all was quiet for the first few years. It appeared the search engine was going to leave us to our own devices until the fall of 2002 when the first real algorithm update hit. Over the next decade, Google would continue to make changes to its algorithm, boggling the minds of SEO gurus around the world.

It wasn’t until 2011 that the infamous Panda update hit, targeting thin content websites. The spring of 2012 brought Penguin, aimed at spammy link tactics. Getting hit by an algorithm update is a bit like getting punched in the gut. Seeing your rankings plummet can knock you to the ground and take the wind out of you. Even after you clean … Read the rest

Shifting demographics and salaries

This year’s data was analyzed by Dr. Pete Meyers, Moz’s Resident Marketing Scientist.

This year’s respondents were 28.3% female, up from 20.7% in 2010, although theses numbers indicate we still have a long way to go.

The survey also examines salaries, as indicated by the graphic below showing the median salary by role of respondents around the world. The full data set (see below) contains even more granular information.
