Changing Landscape in Google’s SERPs May Indicate a Shift in Relevancy

During Pubcon last November, Matt Cutts asked in his keynote how many SEOs where focusing on the snippet found in the search results and doing Click-Through-Rate optimization. Not too many people raised their hand. Matt grinned and said something to the effect that CTR optimization might be worth looking at.

Fact: Google’s search results are what separate it from all other search engines.

Google’s goal is to continually provide better, more relevant search results to answer visitors’ questions quicker. Some of the biggest enhancements Google is making to accomplish this goal are subtle-but-important changes to their results pages. None of them are new and mind blowing, but the common thread that runs through them can indicate – and maybe predict – where SEO is going.

Changes in the SERP

Site Previews: The Site Previews feature was launched in November last year, and even though they aren’t the biggest hit in the SERPs, I think it is the most telling change that Google has made. As shown in the screenshot below, the Site Preview shows a searcher the page before clicking it. One of the features highlighted by Cutts… Read the rest

About two months ago, Google rocked the SEO world with one of their biggest “local” algorithm changes to date. From this algorithm change, it is easy to see that Google is working really hard to win the battle against map spam and also working hard to stress the importance of having a strong presence everywhere online, not just the local search arena (Google Places).

This change in the algorithm has negatively impacted many local businesses with little or no online presence except their Place Pages. Many of these businesses thrived on the search traffic driven to their Place Pages, which resulted in phone calls or foot traffic, which in turn increased sales. Today, many of them are left scrambling for a solution that will help them get their revenue from local search back to where it was a few months ago.

Don’t fret small businesses who have been… Read the rest

Making "Reference" Content Rank Well in the SERPs – Whiteboard Friday

Posted by Aaron Wheeler

I’ve always liked encyclopedias; when I was in middle school I started using Encarta on CD-ROM, and sure, I usually needed it for "help" with my homework, but sometimes I would stray to non-copy-and-pasting-from-encyclopedia activities and watch terribly animated videos of war battles or Shakespearean plays. My poor children will never know the joys of a succinct five page article on the American Revolution with an accompanying 30-second 160 X 200 resolution video! I suppose they’ll have to make due with the way too informative Wikipedia article and an accompanying overly high-def retelling of events – do they really need to be able to see Benjamin Franklin’s hickeys?

Anyways, if my aforementioned future kids do end up needing to write about the American Revolution, and you have a great site about it, how can you make sure they end up seeing your content? There are a lot of reasons for why it can be hard to rank for reference content, but fortunately, Whiteboard Friday is here to help! This week, Rand discusses some great ways to get your reference content to the top of the SERPs.

Mobile SERPS & Usability

Posted by Suzzicks

So here is the deal: Traditional websites frequently rank in mobile search results – especially if you are searching from a SmartPhone. What you may not realize is that the converse is also true – mobile pages can rank well in traditional search. This is quite an interesting phenomenon, and something that we need to address strategically.

All One Index Soon?

Why does this happen?

Well, Google has said that they really don’t want to index two versions of the web – one mobile and one traditional. Even though they do have different mobile-specific bots, they want those their bots all to feed into one index. Hmmmm….Is it just an interesting coincidence that they just launched the multi-format site mapping in Google, where you can combine all the different types of sitemaps that we previously had to submit separately? Possibly. At least it that could indicate a shift away from multiple indexes.

Did anyone notice that this shift happened pretty soon after Caffeine, as did the re-launch of Google Images, and some significant changes in Google Places?

Hmmmm…..It seems that Google might be moving away… Read the rest
