Growing Sales Without a Sales Team: The Power of Distribution

Early on, we made the decision not to grow a sales team at Moz. We’re not anti-sales, per se, it’s just that it does’t fit our culture. We believe in practicing what we preach—inbound marketing—not interruption selling.

Consequently, that provides a bit of a problem for a B2B SaaS business like Moz. Growing through traditional inbound channels is immensely powerful, but at a certain scale, maintaining linearity in growth through content, social media, and search becomes difficult. Working with the role of Business Development at Moz, it’s my job to find those channels that will introduce growth at scale in a predictive way.

Which brings me to distribution.

Just over two years ago when I started at Moz, we began to ponder a simple question: If we offered an extended free trial on Moz (45, 60, 90, or 120 days) to select partners, could it move the needle on growth?

Custom Segments to Increase Sales

One of the things that I like most about Google Analytics is that it can be as simple or as complex as you like. Out of the box it’s very easy to use. Without much experience, you can quickly see the basics, like the amount of traffic you receive as well as the medium and source of traffic. But: We have a problem. The problem is that that’s where most people stop. Too many people are making bad decisions by looking at Google Analytics data from a 30,000-foot view. With a little more work you can reveal some quick insights that could reveal easy CRO wins. To demonstrate how, I’ll cover a couple of advanced segments that I like to use and explain how to set each of them up using custom variables, event tracking, and filters. Advanced segments are a huge area; you can make almost unlimited variations, so I’ve just picked a few that will hopefully inspire you to create some advanced segments of your own (I’d love to hear about them in the comments).

Selling with Integrity: Sponsors BYU Marriott School’s Sales Idol Finals

What happens when you gather 12 nervous students, a panel of judges, a customer with high expectations, and a room full of spectators? You get the final round of the Marriott School Sales Idol competition, held at the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Students in the Strategic Account Management class at the Marriott School of Management gathered on Thursday to put their knowledge and skills to the test, and met with a real customer to submit a proposal for services.

Each year the students are taught sales techniques in a curriculum based on the training program of Griffin Hill. This Utah-based company brings employees through a sales and customer service coaching program which focuses on integrity, and that’s exactly what sets this Strategic Account Management class apart from other classes in the same field.
