Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping [Infographic]

The days immediately following Thanksgiving kick off the beginning of the holiday shopping season and are some of the busiest days of the year for retail sales.  Retailers offer some of their best deals of the year in order to lure in shoppers and shoppers often camp out for hours to score the most popular items.

The term Black Friday was coined in 1966 and has come to be recognized as the day that many retailers become profitable for the year. Steadily growing in popularity, Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.

Black Friday falls the day after Thanksgiving when many non-retail employees are off work.  Deals generally start long before dawn and are now being increasingly offered starting at midnight as well.  It is estimated that 212 million shoppers visited stores on Black Friday in 2010 spending billion dollars- an average of 5 per shopper. Spending increased 6% in 2010 and has doubled since 2005.Gift related items such as toys, clothing, electronics, multimedia, sporting goods, jewelry, and gift cards are the most popular items to purchase on Black Friday.

Black Hat SEO: Killing Your Rankings [Infographic]

Google has warned that black hat tactics are “unethical, overly aggressive marketing efforts where a company tries to manipulate search engine results in an unfair way.” Despite Google’s warnings, many Internet companies persist in providing black hat SEO services. The truth is, using black hat tactics on your site can be as scary as facing these slasher movie murderers.

Doorway pages are set up in such a way that a visitor generally cannot reach them through the site navigation. Instead, they are designed to rank well in the search results and lead people into the site through a spammy page, often stuffed with keywords and nonsense content. A good SEO company will steer clear of this SEO killer.

Hiding links by matching the font to the color of the background of the site is a great way to see your rankings murdered. A sound internal linking strategy is a better way to strengthen your on-page SEO.

Site content is important, but some methods of generating content are anything but safe. Scraping content from the SERPs is a sure way to get your site penalized. Create original,… Read the rest

The Stars of Search Marketing [Infographic]

Inspired by August’s famous Perseid meteor shower, the “Stars of Search” infographic spotlights some of the brightest lights in the SEO universe.

Now keep in mind that this is not a complete list of the search industry’s most gifted personalities, we gathered the troops and grouped 24 people we felt influenced search the most. Several were interviewed and their responses were sharp, witty and a bit revealing at times.

Sadly, the infographic didn’t have room for most of the information gleaned in the interviews.

Who knew Rand Fishkin is obsessed with the NFL and considers himself a foodie?

Tom Critchlow trains in Wing Chun Kung Fu and Jordan Kasteler loves punk rock concerts and tattoos.

We also learned that drinking too much coffee caused heart conditions for Bruce Clay and that Will Critchlow plays basketball in the London premier league. Eric Ward claimed he can eat two dozen donuts in one sitting and you should watch for a rollerblading Danny Sullivan next time you’re in Southern California.

There were no plans to leave the search industry anytime soon, and even though the future is unpredictable, those interviewed said they were… Read the rest

The Buzz on Long Tail Keywords [Infographic]

Today I am going to look at a process in nature that occurs all around us and compare it with an SEO process that is often overlooked. To truly appreciate both of these processes it requires looking at them from a broader perspective.

Bees are marvelous insects. The first thing that most people think of when talking about bees is honey, which is perfectly normal since bees make honey, hence the name “honey bee”. The other thing that we associate with bees is pollination. Bees are responsible for about 80 percent of all pollination. Fruit trees, flowers and all types of vegetation rely on pollination to grow, so besides making honey, the honey bee also has a very big impact on the ecosystem. Similar to the bee and pollination, optimization for one or many main keywords has a very big impact on many other keywords and the rankings of all other pages of the website.

Long Tail Keywords

At the start of an ongoing search engine optimization campaign there is normally a list of keywords chosen to optimize for based on the keyword research that was done. Rankings and return… Read the rest

An SEO’s Guide to HTTP Status Codes (An Infographic)

Posted by Dr. Pete

A while back, I started thinking about how the different status codes and redirects (301s, 302s, etc.) might look visually. I started drawing up some ideas for what was going to be an illustrated blog post, but then it suddenly dawned on me that I was slowly creating an infographic. I then proceeded to have a conversation with myself about how I could never create an infographic and was probably doomed. Depression turned into mania which turned into depression – this happened about 47 times between 9:00 and 9:14am. Actually, that’s the start of my typical day.

I could go on, but I’ll just cut to the chase. I took the most useful HTTP status codes, from an SEO perspective, and illustrated how they work. It’s half cheat-sheet, half-infographic, and mostly just an excuse for me to have some fun. Hopefully, somebody learns something. This is completely my fault, so if you gouge your own eyes out with a spork to escape the horror, don’t sue SEOmoz.
