Small Business and Marketing [Infographic]

What’s your small business SEO strategy? If you’re like the many small business owners, you may be wondering how you can leverage the power of social media and online marketing to get ahead. In fact, only about 27 percent of small businesses have a current SEO plan, and when you combine that surprisingly low figure with fact that only about 40 percent of marketers are using mobile marketing tactics, it’s easy to see how sound search engine optimization practices could help you get a leg up on the competition.

Small business owners are an incredibly diverse group of people who know a lot about their chosen fields. Slightly less than half of all small businesses have more than one owner, and sixty percent of small business owners have worked in their industry for more than 20 years. That’s a lot of total combined experience. These owners are always looking for new ways to connect to their customers and clients and grow their businesses.

If you want evidence of the way the internet is pervading every aspect of our lives, you need look no further than its effect on education. The internet and social media have dramatically changed both teaching and learning.

In fact, most students’ (an incredible 93 percent) first instinct when confronted with a research problem is to turn to Google or Bing to get information rather than going to the library, and despite the best efforts of faculty to discourage its use, Wikipedia is the research resource that is used most often. Google has warned that black hat tactics are “unethical, overly aggressive marketing efforts where a company tries to manipulate search engine results in an unfair way.” Despite Google’s warnings, many Internet companies persist in providing black hat SEO services. The truth is, using black hat tactics on your site can be as scary as facing these slasher movie murderers.

Doorway pages are set up in such a way that a visitor generally cannot reach them through the site navigation. Instead, they are designed to rank well in the search results and lead people into the site through a spammy page, often stuffed with keywords and nonsense content. A good SEO company will steer clear of this SEO killer.

Hiding links by matching the font to the color of the background of the site is a great way to see your rankings murdered. A sound internal linking strategy is a better way to strengthen your on-page SEO.

Site content is important, but some methods of generating content are anything but safe. Scraping content from the SERPs is a sure way to get your site penalized. Create original,… Read the rest

Now keep in mind that this is not a complete list of the search industry’s most gifted personalities, we gathered the troops and grouped 24 people we felt influenced search the most. Several were interviewed and their responses were sharp, witty and a bit revealing at times.

Sadly, the infographic didn’t have room for most of the information gleaned in the interviews.

Who knew Rand Fishkin is obsessed with the NFL and considers himself a foodie?

Tom Critchlow trains in Wing Chun Kung Fu and Jordan Kasteler loves punk rock concerts and tattoos.

We also learned that drinking too much coffee caused heart conditions for Bruce Clay and that Will Critchlow plays basketball in the London premier league. Eric Ward claimed he can eat two dozen donuts in one sitting and you should watch for a rollerblading Danny Sullivan next time you’re in Southern California.

There were no plans to leave the search industry anytime soon, and even though the future is unpredictable, those interviewed said they were… Read the rest
