The Future of SEO: 2015 Ranking Factors Expert Survey Deep Dive

Recently, Moz announced the results of our biennial Ranking Factors study. Today, we’d like to explore one of the most vital elements of the study: the Ranking Factors survey.

Every two years, Moz surveys the brightest minds in SEO and search marketing with a comprehensive set of questions meant to gauge the current workings of Google’s search algorithm. This year’s panel of experts possesses a truly unique set of knowledge and perspectives. We’re thankful on behalf of the entire community for their contribution.

In addition to asking the participants about what does and doesn’t work in Google’s ranking algorithm today, one of the most illuminating group of questions asks the panel to predict the future of search – how the features of Google’s algorithm are expected to change over the next 12 months.

Amazingly, almost all of the factors that are expected to increase in influence revolved around user experience, including:

  • Mobile-friendliness
  • Perceived value
  • Readability

A Deep Dive into Google MyAnswers

A few months ago I published here on Moz SEO in the Personalization Age, where I explained why, once and for all, SEOs need to be aware of the personalization of SERPs and the mechanisms by which Google customizes our search results. I also suggested some ways to convert what at first sight is just a complication into a competitive advantage.

This post is the ideal continuation of that one.

Here, however, I won’t dig into SEO theories and patents, but I will try to put order in all of the existing information about the elements that compose MyAnswers, highlighting some clarification that many – wrongly – absent-mindedly forget, and suggesting actions that can mean the difference between winning or not the personalized SERPs.

First, I’m making the assumption that you’re reading this article because you either have a website in WordPress, and you want to make sure people can find it from the search engines, or you are about to embark upon, or are interested in building and launching a site in WordPress, which can be easily found via the search engines. If you don’t fit either of these categories, I encourage you to read on anyway so you’ll be converted to the glorious content management system (CMS) that is WordPress.

Another assumption I make when talking about search engine optimization: that you have truly awesome content, and not just because your mother says it is. If your content is written such that your average customer would understand and find it useful and enjoyable, then you’ve got awesome content. Notice the adjective: awesome. ‘Good’ just doesn’t cut it anymore. You’ve got to ROCK the content department. In order to do that, you really ought to have an awesome content strategy.
